Explore Independent Media

FiveFilters.org started with the aim of promoting non-corporate, independent media. Unfortunately the app that started it all hasn’t been working for quite a while because of Google shutting down its search API. We’ve finally had time to fix it and remove our dependence on Java. Try it out: Explore Independent Media.

It currently searches a handful of sites: Media Lens, Counterpunch, Democracy Now, The Canary, and Truthdig. But we’re considering expanding it and allowing users to enter their own preferred sources. Let us know what you think.

In other FiveFilters.org media-activism news: In June, after Jeremy Corbyn did so well in the UK general election, we published a page showing the Guardian’s hostility toward Corbyn and his agenda, and urged readers to Dump the Guardian. Thanks to Media Lens and many others who shared it, our page went viral on Twitter and Facebook with thousands of shares and tweets.

On Twitter, it was shared by historian Mark Curtis, rapper Akala, anthropologist David Graeber, and many, many others. On Facebook, people added their own thoughts about the Guardian when sharing it.

A month later we released a short video of Corbyn as Stormzy responding to Guardian journalists. Enjoy 🙂
